Life Insurance Health Exams Explained

When applying for life insurance, you’ll typically get better rates and coverage if you complete a medical exam. It might sound intimidating, but it’s probably simpler than you think.

Learning what’s involved can ease your anxiety so you feel comfortable moving forward.

What are life insurance companies looking for?

Life insurance companies want to offer you coverage at a fair price. The exam gives them current information about your height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and drug use.

Depending on your age, health and requested coverage, the insurer might require more than a simple checkup with blood and urine samples. They might also require an electrical heart activity test called an EKG (which is painless), a treadmill stress test or a cognitive ability test.

How do you prepare for a life insurance medical exam?

Here are some steps you can take in the days before your exam to put your best self forward:

Eat healthy: Limit salt and saturated fat; avoid alcohol; increase vegetables and fiber.

Don’t increase blood pressure and heart rate: Skip caffeine, nicotine, antihistamines and decongestants; stay well hydrated; minimize stress.

Rest up: Avoid strenuous exercise; get plenty of sleep.

Follow fasting instructions: If directed, avoid calories for up to 12 hours before your exam.

Reschedule if sick: Your results may be abnormal if your body is fighting illness.
