If you think your skin has lost its glow, you aren’t alone: Each year, millions of Americans spend their money on cosmetics and treatments to fight acne or other skin issues.
But that’s not the only way to deal with skin issues. There are good personal habits you can adopt to maintain a healthier complexion (and feel better).
Here are a few that you can probably easily add to your daily routine.
Start on the inside.
For glowing skin, altering your eating patterns could help. You can consider cutting back on sugar and eating more of the following foods:
- Legumes and grains with a low glycemic index.
- Leafy greens.
- High-fiber foods.
Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C (like oranges, strawberries, bell peppers and broccoli) can also encourage skin healing and texture. Your skin benefits when you stay hydrated, so drink at least eight glasses of water daily — more if you sweat a lot or are breastfeeding or ill.
Be good to your skin.
It helps to treat your skin well each day by:
- Using an SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen, even in winter.
- Wearing protective clothing and avoiding prolonged sun exposure.
- Cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing your skin, especially before bed.
- Testing skin care products before using them liberally.
- Checking expiration dates on cosmetics, moisturizers and sunscreens.
Practice self-care.
Self-care is important when it comes to having healthy skin. To look and feel your best, try:
- Getting about eight hours of sleep nightly.
- Reducing stress levels through journaling, meditation or other methods.
- Regularly walking, biking, swimming or participating in other enjoyable activities.
